Washing your keyboard tutorial

Today I washed my keyboard and decided to take some photos, I need to sell this PC on eBay and I don't want the buyer to see how disgusting this keyboard really is. Remember that article online about how a keyboard can have 1000 times more germs than your toilet, well now I have my own proof. If you want to know how to wash your keyboard follow my tutorial :)

Beware this tutorial contains really disturbing images of disgusting keyboard!!

OK I know this has nothing to do with animation or digital imaging, but I did took the effort to get good photos and even use a tripod when necessary. However after shooting I had discovered I forgot to lock the AF on the camera! and had accidently bump AF button and was shooting in manual, so some images are bit blurry.

OK so below is my acer keyboard I used since 1998, its very responsive and quiet, this is the only hardware I don't replace when upgrading PC. But it is filled with layers of dust, pizza, hair and dead insects. I have never cleaned it, ever. I warned you.

Now the first thing you should do is take a photo of your keyboard before taking out the keys, otherwise you'll have a hard time putting it back again.

Next I unscrew the metal plate below the keyboard and flip keyboard upside down to remove every single key with a small nipper. Remove the rubber pad and the circuit board attached to the bottom plate. Put some paper below to catch falling dirty stuff. You can see below with almost all the keys removed…I'm in for more shock, almost a micro biome living inside of my keyboard…I take a tooth brush to scrub off all inhabitants of my keyboard.

I then put all 104 keys in container and rinse it with washing detergent to remove the oily stuff, let it sink in for a while. Next is the hard part, I use white bleach and a tooth brush to scrub off every key, took me about 1 hour to hand scrub every key. As for the keyboard base, be sure you remove the circuit board and drop it in the sink, and use the same method to clean it. By the end of washing my leg had become stiff.

After washing I layout the keys on some paper to wait for them to dry, be sure to shake water off keys so water between the holes on the back of the key are not trapped inside.

When all keys are dry, place them back according to the photo you took earlier. Then double check they are all correctly placed, some keys like "alt" can be different size depending on right or left. I discover all keys on this keyboard are unique. Both "alt" and "window" key are different size depending on right or left side, left sides are slightly bigger.

I then place back the circuit board and rubber pad screw the two piece back together.

Here's it is finally, looking spanking new! I plug it back on to the PC to test it, and every key works perfect.

After all this work I had questioned why these keyboard were not designed to prevent dust, or more easy to clean like your cloth. Or even be used once and thrown away, like in some restaurant were you have a plastic sheet below the dinning table, after eating you can throw away the sheet with the food on it, so you don't need the clean the table. So you could have something below the keys to catch the dust and once in a while throw away the dust with the sheet, and put a clean one below. Or better still nothing should be below the keys and dust would fall right through it on to table or carpet so you can clean it normally with a vacuum cleaner.

  1. Scarry keyboard I can’t sleep after watching this operation !! :P
My left thumb is stuck on the ALT button :P
    Thanks for the tutorial

  2. You know what I do? I just wrap mine in food wrap–just don’t do it too tight or you’ll punc holes in it when you type. One wrap can last weeks and weeks, and once you’ve punched a couple of holes in it, just replace the wrap with another sheet. No more food/drink/dust in the keys.

  3. Err… I think you’ve got a little too much time on your hands… but good work anyway.

How do you wash a laptop’s keyboard?

  4. I followed your instructions “As for the keyboard base, be sure you remove the circuit board and drop it in the sink”.

I removed the circuit board and dropped it (the circuit board) in the sink of hot water. It was still connected to the cord and it made a hissing noise and the computer started flashing error messages and stopped working.

Do you think I should have used cold water.

  5. I’d rather wash windows :)

  6. Has the thought of purchasing a new $5-$10 keyboard ever crossed your mind? The time it takes to take apart, clean, and reassemble the keyboard is not worth $5.00, if you ask me.

They are not designed to be cleaned, because they are so cheap! Mice too. In fact, I saw what looked to be a decent mouse at a dollar store! Next time, I go there I will pick one up, just to test it. If i remember correctly, it even had a scroller. I didn’t see a keyboard, but I did see a USB 2.0 cable (wow) for $1.00. That’s cheaper than eBay!

Big Lots and Wal-Mart have keyboards for $5.00.

Perhaps I will stock up on keyboards and mice!

  7. a good keyboard is worth more than couple of bucks, it is not exchangable with money only a better design can replace it, and thats hard to come by. You may have a pair of shoe you wore many times over that fits you extremely well, you can't just buy any shoe of the same price to replace it.
